Website for Play Bow Dog Training LLC

Category : Web, Work, tacoma

Play Bow Dog Training LLC is a new dog training facility in Tacoma, WA. One of the trainers, Numia, provided training for our dog shortly after we rescued her. She is an outstanding trainer and seems to have a lot of fun teaching people how to be better dog owners.

Dianna designed their logo, business cards, post cards and signage. She also provided the initial layout of the website. I converted her design into a WordPress theme.

Default Font Italicized in Firefox on Mac

Category : Problems Solved

I recently noticed that default text on a web site I was working on was being displayed in italics. It was only in Firefox, so I thought maybe it was being caused by an add-on. I tried disabling them, but still had the italicized text.

I ended up fixing the issue by restarting the font server and then restart Firefox.

Restart the font server by opening a Terminal window in OS X (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal). Then type the following commands, hitting Enter after each line.

atsutil databases -removeUser
atsutil server -shutdown
atsutil server -ping

Now restart Firefox.

This was on OS X v10.6.2 and Firefox 3.6.3.

Can’t Upload Multiple Attachments in Gmail

Category : Web

I never really noticed before, but Gmail uses Flash for uploading attachments. My wife noticed that she wasn’t able to upload multiple files at once when composing an email in Gmail. At first we though maybe it was the recent Firefox update, but then I remembered that she had just installed the Flashblock add-on for Firefox. This add-on is great for preventing Flash advertisements and other autoplay Flash movies. Usually you can still see where a Flash movie was blocked, but not in Gmail since the Google developers have done such a great job of gracefully degrading to a standard file upload control.

It’s easy to add sites to the Flashblock Whitelist, allowing Flash to load on those domains in the list. Just go to ‘Tools>Add-Ons’ then select Flashblock. Click on the ‘Preferences’ button, then ‘Whitelist’. Here you type the web site URL without adding the protocol, which for Gmail would be mail.google.com. Click ‘OK’ then close the Add-ons window. The Whitelist takes effect instantly, so you can start composing a new email right away and add multiple attachments to it.

BlackBerry Tour After One Week

Category : Tech

After one full week of having a new BlackBerry Tour 9630, I thought I’d write a quick review. This is my first BlackBerry, so there is a little learning curve to the operating system. I have been using an iPod Touch for several months and my phone for the last two years has been a Sony Ericson w580i, so the QWERTY keyboard is also taking a little adjustment. Overall, I find the messaging to be exceptional. Surfing the web in the BlackBerry browser isn’t quite as smooth as Safari on the iPod Touch/iPhone, but it isn’t bad experience.

Out of the box

I had one issue before I even started using the Tour. I took it out of the box and had a bit of trouble getting the battery cover off. The instructions weren’t really clear. I had to push up the silver latch then pry open the bottom of the cover with a fingernail.

WiFi would be a nice feature.

It would be nice if the headset jack was on top rather than on the side.

Letter to my ISP

I just want to voice my opinion regarding the recent letter I received regarding the download caps put in place. I’m not sure if this was a Click! Network decision or Advanced Stream, but I think it is pathetic attempt at trying to keep users from streaming content that the cable companies are deluded enough to think will interfere with normal television viewership. I think that NBC’s recent success using their web site to supplement their coverage of the Olympics proved that these forms media can be more symbiotic than parasitic.

Also, since there is a specific cap being put into place, there should be a way to monitor usage like what can be done with cell phone plans. That way if someone does go over their limit, they had been given an opportunity for warning before having service disrupted. There should also be a tier system for those who think they might actually go over the imposed limits. I do web development and my wife is a graphic designer. We both work at home on occasion and need to send and receive files (sometimes very large), so having our internet service disrupted could be a major inconvenience. Like a lot of pseudo-monopoly industries like the music labels, the cable companies seem to be extremely out of touch with how people use the Internet. I know I am often on the web WHILE the TV is on. I pay for both services, I should be able to use both of them.

IE Death March

It confounds me that people will not upgrade software when it is free. As long as sites are hacked for backwards compatibility, ie users will not see the need to upgrade. I hope more people stop supporting ie6.

This quote really puts some perspective on the problem:

Internet Explorer 6 will be SEVEN years old on August 27th. It came out a few weeks before the Twin Towers fell. It came out before the Nintendo GameCube. It came out before the first iPod.

IE Death March.

iPhone 3G

Category : Tech

Thanks AT&T.

I have been an AT&T customer since they swallowed Cingular. My bill gets paid automatically, so no late payments. I have been pretty happy with my service. I have no problem with coverage here in Western Washington, or other places I travel.

Then, the other day when the iPhone 3G was released, I figured I’d give it a shot. See if the store I happened to be near around midday had any left. I went in and found that they had four white 16GB iPhones remaining. I kind of wanted the black, 8Gb one, but went with it anyway. This is when the sales person asks me for my current number. She punched it into the system, then tells me they can’t sell it to me because I’m not eligible for an upgrade until November 2009. I guess the fact that I’m willing to commit to a more expensive service plan for two more years doesn’t make them enough money to allow them to sell me the phone for the subsidized price.

I understand that they want to pull in Apple junkies as new customers and take full advantage of their agreement to sell the iPhone, but to me this was insulting. I was instantly cured of my craving for an iPhone. I like my Sony Ericsson w580i Walkman phone and I may buy an iPod Touch at some point. I’m pretty sure I won’t be renewing my AT&T contract once it is up.

My Laptop

Category : Computer

I bought an HP Pavillion dv2220us laptop about a year ago, tryng to stay away from Dell and Gateway because of many problems related to those manufacturers’ computers. It has been great up until a few days ago, of course this coincides with the lapse of the one-year warranty.

Computer ScreenI’ll be using it for a while, then suddenly the screen goes haywire and I can no longer control anything. I think it’s the video card. I just contacted HP, hopefully they will have an idea or at least allow me to send it in under the warranty.

UPDATE 4-8-08: HP is sending a box so I can send my laptop in for repair. At the moment, it doesn’t even boot. The hard drive works, so I have everything backed up. We’ll see how this process goes.

I’ve never really been a “Mac” or “PC” guy, but I have always owned Windows-based machines. Partly because I have always worked at companies that used computers from Dell or Gateway. I have liked Macs, used them in school, and my wife uses one, but I never took the leap. Recently, I have grown tired of dealing with hardware issues from the major manufacturers and the issues (although minor) that I have been having with Vista. I may soon own a MacBook Pro.

UPDATE 5-2-08: HP replaced the motherboard and sent my computer back. Everything seems to be good as new. I ended up reinstalling Vista just for the heck of it. Now I need to figure out what to do with the spare computer, because I did buy a 15-inch MacBook Pro and I love it.
