I was downtown serving my civic responsibility at jury duty again today, so at luchtime I was able to make it over to the Harmon Hub which just opened this week. There was a blurb yesterday on exit133.com.
I kept it simple, having the salami sandwich. It was on a baby baquette with provolone and roasted red peppers. I also had a side salad with their cucumber dressing. To drink, I had a pint of Harmon’s Mild Thing ale, which is true to its name. The guy next to me had the fish & chips, which he said was a bit slimy. Pat Nagle, the owner, was there and commented that the fish they were using wasn’t working well and they eighty-sixed the dish.
I had never been to the St Helen’s Cafe, which previously occupied the space, so I can’t comment on what is different as far as decor, but it looked nice to me. It was partitioned just enough to create three or four separate spaces. The artwork and color scheme made the place warm and inviting.
Opening a restaurant is tough, so there is bound to be a lot of tweaking going on, even after their grand opening on Friday. Hopefully things will go well for them. I will definitely be back and would suggest checking it out.

I bought an HP Pavillion dv2220us laptop about a year ago, tryng to stay away from Dell and Gateway because of many problems related to those manufacturers’ computers. It has been great up until a few days ago, of course this coincides with the lapse of the one-year warranty.
I’ll be using it for a while, then suddenly the screen goes haywire and I can no longer control anything. I think it’s the video card. I just contacted HP, hopefully they will have an idea or at least allow me to send it in under the warranty.
UPDATE 4-8-08: HP is sending a box so I can send my laptop in for repair. At the moment, it doesn’t even boot. The hard drive works, so I have everything backed up. We’ll see how this process goes.
I’ve never really been a “Mac” or “PC” guy, but I have always owned Windows-based machines. Partly because I have always worked at companies that used computers from Dell or Gateway. I have liked Macs, used them in school, and my wife uses one, but I never took the leap. Recently, I have grown tired of dealing with hardware issues from the major manufacturers and the issues (although minor) that I have been having with Vista. I may soon own a MacBook Pro.
UPDATE 5-2-08: HP replaced the motherboard and sent my computer back. Everything seems to be good as new. I ended up reinstalling Vista just for the heck of it. Now I need to figure out what to do with the spare computer, because I did buy a 15-inch MacBook Pro and I love it.

I have passed Mary’s Burger Bistro on Pacific Avenue many times while heading to and from downtown Tacoma. Each time, something about the vintage sign and the cozy-looking store front made me want to stop in for a burger. Today, I finally passed during lunchtime and went in to grab a bite. I ordered one of the daily specials, an Onion BBQ Burger, along with fries and a chocolate shake. The shake came out first, extra thick, made with vanilla ice cream and Hershey’s syrup. Delicious! It was just like my mom used to make. The fries were fresh-cut and there were more in my basket than I could eat. The burger was piping hot, a 1/3-pound patty served on a grilled onion bun, topped with grilled onion, BBQ sauce and cheddar cheese. It had a nice ratio of sauce and onions so it had the flavor without being a total mess to eat. I look forward to visiting again soon and trying one of Mary’s other signature burgers.
For those non-beef eaters, Mary also serves chicken and salmon ‘burgers’ as well as deli sandwiches.
The place seemed to be doing well. While I was there, around 12:30, there were about eleven other customers. I overheard another couple say that their son, who went to UW Tacoma, had turned them on to Mary’s and that it had become there regular burger joint. Another gentleman mentioned meeting associates there recently. I hope the Burger Bistro continues to pick up regular customers and is successful.
